Book Buku Pintar Elektronik (BPE) is my final essay in college about smart electronic book for education. I will try to post from preliminary and results of my research. The original files is in Bahasa Indonesia but I hope everybody can read these in universal language, so I translated. Let’s see how BPE’s work to help teacher and students in learning.
Education is an important part in the development of a nation and even become one of the benchmarks of success in the Human Index Development. Education also plays an important role the objectives of the Indonesian nation as stated in the preamble of the Act of 1945 which is to the intellectual life of the nation. In Law Number 20, year 2003 on National Education System is described as follows.
National education serves to develop the ability and character development and civilization of the nation’s dignity in the context of the intellectual life of the nation, is aimed at developing students’ potentials to become a man of faith and devoted to God Almighty, noble, healthy, knowledgeable, skilled, creative, independent and become citizens of a democratic and accountable.
From the above definition, it is clear that the government wants to form a generation of people to be fully human holistically through education. For this to happen, the government continues to develop the main runway is the reference / pace towards the education curriculum.
The curriculum has a key position in the education as a vehicle / instrument of accession to achieve educational goals. The curriculum also acts as a driving force of education in which includes objectives, content / learning content and assessment to establish the quality of man referred to in the national education goals.
In Law Number 20, year 2003 on National Education System explained that curriculum is plans and setting the objectives, content and learning materials are used to achieve the purpose. Thus, the quality of education is determined by quality of the curriculum. Changing times grew rapidly in the modern era also become important things that must be considered in the formation of the curriculum.
As we know that the government in 2013 published a new curriculum called Kurikulum 2013 or so-called Kurtilas with their four core competencies (KI): core competencies 1 (KI-1) for the core competencies of spiritual attitudes, core competencies 2 (KI 2) for core competencies of social attitudes, core competencies 3 (KI-3) for the core competencies of knowledge, and core competencies 4 (KI-4) for the core competency skills. Curriculum change is a proof that the curriculum continues to be revised and improved by adjusting the dynamics of the changing times.
As a novelty, the curriculum in 2013 reaped a wide range of pros and cons of various circles. Indeed, the diffusion of innovation, including the curriculum will still need the power of the four major elements. Rogers (2003: 12) explains, “Diffusion is the process in the which an innovation is communicated through channels over time among the members of a social system”. From these explanations, the main elements of the diffusion of an innovation is the innovation itself, communication, time, and social systems.
Educational social system conditions of teachers, students, facilities and infrastructure must also be considered given the vast geographical condition of Indonesia with a large number of people in it. Similarly, the time required for socialization, training, distribution of teaching materials and so also requires relatively no little time. The emergence of the curriculum in 2013 that is considered hasty raises the pros and cons of the various parties. Minister of Education and Culture provides to answers to the pros and cons that exist in Kurtilas. Anies Baswedan who served as Minister of Education and Culture of Primary and Secondary Education finally authorize the school to choose the use curriculum that is allowed to use the old curriculum or use Kurtilas. Furthermore, Kurtilas will be evaluated to implement in the pilot project schools.
During the ongoing process of curriculum in 2013, a variety of barriers and obstacles that arise to make the curriculum as “life would not hesitate to disappear”. Teachers are required to be creative, fast, precise and innovative themes in processing that is performed using methods and media that are no longer monotonous. Students must also be prepared to be more active with their discussions, simple research, as well as the formation of groups (Hajar, 2013: 36-37). As the impact of integration, some teachers declined drastically the number of teaching hours or do not teach anymore because the course was integrated in others. Additionally, facilities and infrastructure were distributed to schools also experienced problems.
In an effort to cope with the number of books and other teaching materials that have constraints, the Minister of Education and Culture, Anies Baswedan, re-issued a breakthrough to use the tablet as a learning tool called E-Sabak supported the cooperation with MCIT and Telkom’s for Terdepan, Terluar, Terpencil (3T) regions. Sabak Electronic (E-Sabak) will contain books learning materials where there had already been Electronic School Book (BSE), but with the E-Sabak electronic book will be more interactive with a quiz and forth in it. With the E-Sabak, expected the region 3T will be easier to obtain teaching materials so that students in the area will have the same quality with students in urban areas.
Regardless of optimism and pessimism that exist from various circles, we must remember that the E-Sabak is one use of media and information and communication technology (ICT) as a learning aid. As great as the media certainly will not function properly if it does not have the appropriate content to the desired destination. The government has issued electronic books that can be downloaded and used in a study called Electronic School Book (BSE).
Electronic School Book (BSE) provided the government seemed to be static with just text and images as yet included in the multimedia content either video, audio, animation, and more interactivity. This causes learning with Electronic School Book less can increase student interest in the absence of an interesting visualization such as video and animation including the absence of a quiz / interactive questions in it. Learning is done also impressed because teachers more conventional lectures so that students tend to not pay attention to the material presented by the teacher. Students also looks passive and do not provide feedback when teachers deliver material and give the task.
Book Smart Electronics – called Buku Pintar Elektronik (BPE) in Bahasa – is a new innovation of electronic books that can include multimedia content (video, animation, audio) and interactivity such as test questions and simulations that can be run on multiple platforms both for mobile devices (mobile) or computer / laptop. Book Smart Electronics (BPE) has the same structure parts like electronic books and printed books in general as the cover page, table of contents, list of references, and so on. However, the Electronic Book Smart (BPE) has the advantage that can load multimedia content and interactivity in learning support.
Development of Electronic Book Smart (BPE) is necessary to support the teaching and learning process in the 4th grade of SD Negeri 04 Srondol Wetan Semarang considering that the students and teachers are already using multimedia tools such as LCD and computers for teaching and learning in the classical style. Moreover, learning in the curriculum in 2013 also recommended to integrate learning with information and communication technology (ICT). Hopefully, by the Electronic Smart Book (BPE), the results will increase student learning and foster a spirit, interest, and involvement of the student in the learning process in the classroom.
This is consistent with the results of preliminary observations made in the 4th grade of SD Negeri 04 Srondol Wetan Semarang in February 2015. Based on observations, it is known that learning is still using conventional printed book. Students assume that the theme of my place is the most difficult. This can be seen from the results of student learning on the theme of my place is still below the minimum completeness criteria (KKM). In addition, thematic learning requires teachers to convey a lot of material in the form of themes cause learning with less conventional methods can boost the spirit of the student so that the learning process becomes ineffective. Implementation of learning only with conventional printed book can not meet the needs of students will visualize concrete with adequate interactivity. Value of learning outcomes is still below the standard of completeness, the implementation of the media is less support for learning, and the ineffectiveness of the learning process becomes a task for the teacher to find the right solution for solving these problems.
Based on ideas and innovation, the authors feel the need to conduct research on “Development of Electronic Smart Book (BPE) on the theme of my place for the 4th grade of SDN 04 Srondol Wetan Semarang.
Based on the above background, some problems can be formulated as follows.
- How is the development of Electronic Smart Book (BPE) on the theme of my place for 4th grade of SDN Srondol Wetan 04 Semarang?
- How is the implementation of Electronic Smart Book (BPE) on the theme of my place for 4th grade of SDN Srondol Wetan 04 Semarang?
- How is the effectiveness of the Electronic Smart Book (BPE) on the theme of my place for 4th grade of SDN Srondol Wetan 04 Semarang?
Limitation of problems is done by considering the breadth of the problems and peculiarities of the field of study. Based on the above formulation of research problems, the researchers limited dependent variables still have a fairly extensive research coverage, namely the effectiveness variable affecting student learning outcomes and student interest. Learning outcomes in the 2013 curriculum includes three domains, namely attitude for KI 1 and KI 2, cognitive or knowledge to KI 3, and skills to KI 4. The research will be limited to the cognitive aspects, or in other words the researchers wanted BPE examine the effectiveness of the learning outcome primarily on cognitive aspects of the theme of my place in the 4th grade students of SDN Srondol Wetan 04 Semarang. In the theme of my place there are some subjects that the study was limited to the subject of uniqueness regions in Indonesia.
In accordance with the formulation of the problems mentioned above, the purpose of the research in this paper can be described as follows.
- Determine the development of Electronic Smart Book (BPE) on the theme of my place for the 4th grade of SDN Srondol Wetan 04 Semarang including GBIM development, concept maps and map material, as well as the script (storyboard) supporting BPE;
- Implement Electronic Smart Book (BPE) on the theme of my place for the 4th grade of SDN Srondol Wetan 04 Semarang;
- Testing the effectiveness of Electronic Smart Book (BPE) on the theme of my place in an effort to improve student learning outcomes in 4th grade of SDN Srondol Wetan 04 Semarang.
